"Chinese Cinderella" chapter 5
In the fifth chapter Adeline, big sister, big brother and second brother were taken out and ended up at the railroad station, there was a platform they were told to go to labelled Shanghai, there the family came to see their father whom they had almost forgotten. Their father told them that they were moving to Shanghai now for a fresh start and that Ye Ye third brother and Aunt Baba would join them later when third brother had recovered from the measles. The children must of been shocked to learn that they were leaving without saying goodbye to anyone, and most of all overjoyed to see their father who they thought abandoned them. When they arrived to Shanghai they went on a tour of a house they would now call their home. It was tough for them all to adapt to the new surroundings knowing no body but their family there. The children were given strict rules that they were all to follow and if any of them stepped out of line there would be serious consequences! At the end of the chapter big brother says, "To her, we are not seperate people. Over here, we have become one single unit known as all of you. Seems like this is how it's going to be from now on." Which tells the readers that the fathers children are not treated like the unique and special human beings they are. It would be quite hard for Adeline starting over with people who hardly care about her and bully and neglect her. With her Aunt Baba still in Tainjin it would be hard for her especially. The story is now set in Shanghai not Tainjin. The house they live in is beautiful and big. I also felt a personal link to this chapter as i moved from Kalgoorlie last year and at the start i found it hard to adapt to the new surroundings and fit in with people, but now it's easier knowing people and not feeling as different or like the odd one out. I think if i had to be a character in "Chinese Cinderella" it would be either Adeline's step brother or step sister as they are appreciated and favoured and they aren't abused or neglected and throughout the entire book they don't loose anyone who is close to them. They live a good life and people care about them and make sure they are well looked after.
